Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
Circulation for May 2005 totaled 9,964 items, which is 1,855 items more than the
same time period last year. This is a 23% over the same time period last year.
The library has circulated 110,429 items thus far this fiscal year. That figure is
less than 3,000 items under our all time high, with the month of June to go.
(Current record is 113,209 in FY 2002) I project that we will end the year with
about 120,000 items circulated.
I have been working on a Power Point presentation for the Department Heads
meeting on June 15h. The Town is using this as a tool to present department
budgets in a more business like manner. We are hoping to show taxpayers (our
customers) what they get for the money they spend through the Town of.
Mashpee (taxes). Judie Hunter, the new Finance Director, has designed the
format of the presentations and the departments are filling in information, which
shows the value of their services.
We don't get many new items in this time of year because we are at the end of
the fiscal year and most of our funding has been expended. The staff has used
time that would have gone into new acquisitions to work on some cleanup
projects. I have recently weeded the video collection to get rid of dead wood and
make space for more active items. Lauren Kaminer worked on rearranging the
remaining videos so we had space to display the DVDs on the video shelving.
We were using a makeshift arrangement that was difficult for more than one
patron at a time to browse. The new look is much more attractive and easier for
patrons to browse.
On May 1dh, I attended the Massachusetts Library Association Annual
Conference at Seacrest in Falmouth. Several of the sessions I attended
discussed interesting ways to do library displays with very little space or money.
Both of those situations seem to fit Mashpee. So far, we've hung a couple of
danglers from the ceiling to spotlight our audio book collections. Janet Burke is
going to use the same technique with her summer reading posters. We've done
a better job displaying the videos, DVDs and audio CDs. It seems like more
music CDs are circulating since we redid that area. I'd like to incorporate better
display areas and furniture into the new library. In the meantime, the staff is
experimenting with ways we can make the collections look more inviting in this
building.
On May 12th, I attended the monthly meeting of the Mashpee Americans with
Disabilities Act Committee. I was invited to the meeting to tell them about the
new library and it's accessibility. I brought the architectural drawings and
