I
F iashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
Circulation for February' 2006 totaled 9,102 items, 557 items more than last
February. Year4 -date, circulation is 87,751 items which-is % more than last
year. Looking back Just four years ago, our circulation at this point was 72,454.
Those 15,000 items are equal to two months of extra circulation.
The fiction weeding project continues and although not complete, we have freed
up enough shelf space to improve the space problems in the Mystery and Large
Print sections. Before shifting, these sections were Jam packed. - Shifting has
eased that problem, raking it easier to browse these areas and lessening wear
and tear on the bindings.
I attended a discussion of department heads on d new Personnel Evaluation
,(F.System. The -current system has flaws including--too few performance ranges ,
(excellent, satisfactory and unsatisfactory) to rank staff. . Excellent is only to be
uised -for exceptional performances so most fall into the satisfactory category.
Staff' perception sees satisfactory as average and-feel under appreciated for their,
performances. The staff all performs - t a high level so I've wished for an
expanded number of performance options. The proposed system -e pands the
number-of categories and clearly defines traits that fall into each rating. Joint
t
goals between supervisor and staff are built ,-into the new evaluations. Gerry
Bruno, a consultant, will conduct a workshop on the topic on March 3&. The
town would like to implement the new system net year and perhaps incorporate
a merit system into the evaluations in another year or two.
I will be attending a workshop on building accessibility, suggested byPatience
Jackson. She emailed information about the workshop to libraries on-the gait list.
I IPLC staff will be conducting the workshop at the Minuteman Network in Natick.
I -hope .to bring back information that will be helpful On our upcoming design
phase. I attended a meeting of the ADA committee last spring and assured therm
that we-,would incorporate accessible features in-the new library. - I hope to pick
up information on new products and design features.
Many of you attended the unveiling ceremony at Siena last week. - The model
was very well received and is currently on display in the library. We've received
many, positive comments from patrons who have seem it. The model will be here
for several, weeks, then travel to various locations in town to maximize a the
number of residents that see it. It is hoped that the model will kick off donations.
I spoke to two selectmen and the town manager about the article to increase the
children's librarians position. The articles had been reviewed at a joint meeting
of the Board of Selectmen and Fincom. The article survived that review. final
review is scheduled for the 1305 meetingn- March 13 th
_
