Mashpee Public Library
P.0. Box 657
Mashpee, Ilia 02649
Circulation for November 2006 was 10,932 items; making our year-toAate total
62,442 items circulated. We did see some impact during the beginning of
October when Falmouth's main library was closed during their move. We are
running almost 5% ahem of last years transactions. As -you can see by the
attached spreadsheet: Mashpee is once again the fifth busiest CLAMS library in
terms of items circulated.
The FY 2008 budget was completed and submitted to Joyce Mason before the
deadline. It was basically a level funded budget with the exception of some
adjustments to staffing and utilities costs. I have requested that Bridget
Bontrager`s hours be increased flora 30 to 35 hours a week and added in the
temporary summer help that we discussed lest month. I've included a copy of
the library"s budget narrative that details the reason for the amount requested in
each line item. My budget meeting with Joyce is on December 1:P. That will be
the first feedback I get on how the town will view our requests.
The Planning Department did a training session on howl to use the Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) software. I had been scheduled to attend so Bridget
went in my absence. There didn't seem to be a lot of instances where we would
use the software at the library but it gage a nice overviews about the program'
capabilities. Torn Mayo, the Assistant Town Planner, is extremely knowledgeable
about GIS. I asked him fro an overview of the uses of GIS and he provided the
following information:
GIS is a tool designed to create a link between raps and databases. This link allows the user to
analyze complex relationships between different layers of information. For example, with a GIS
we can see at a glance how a proposed zoning change would effect a certain neighborhood or
business district, or we can see where the streets on the town's'no plow' list are located and how
that might effect travel in town during a snow storm. Cather ways the Town uses GIS include a
method to automate the creation of reaps, maintaining an updated accounting of reap features in
town, i.e. parcels, buildings, streets, aerial photography...etc., and for developing new layers o
information that had not been used on a neap in the past, i.e. locations of registered gun owners
or registered dog licenses (both of which would be useful to emergency responders).
We would most likely refer patrons with specific needs or questions to Torn. We
have a street map of Mashpee on display which Torn generated using the GIS
program.
