to the public for their information. Attempts such as these
would serve to gather support for the library effort and to
raise public awareness that an expansion is necessary in order
to provide better services.
Mr. Lucker spoke to the process of program explaining a
decision on the size of the building would have to be determined.
When the Committee determines the size of usable space, the
architect will then determine the gross square footage.
The first process is to decide how the building/space is to
be used by way of general organization of the building and the
types of activities anticipated. The second process involves
quantification of volumes into square feet.
Mr. Lucker advised the Committee of some of the continuing
additional costs involved in a library expansion project. Use of
the library will rise dramatically creating a demand for
additional operating hours, services, and staffing; the
additional. created space will warrant additional collections; as
well as the necessity for a book security system in order to
protect library investments.
Mr. Lucker asked the Committee to carefully consider the
various types of programming they would like to see implemented
such as lectures, films, etc. ; and he advised that a larger
building will obviously increase operational/maintenance costs .
Mr. Lucker advised against creating two entrances, he asked
the Committee to decide whether or not they wanted more than one
circulation desk (adult/children) . He did encourage the
Committee to maintain and reflect the unique character of the
Town within the library design.
Ms. Powers made it clear that she would like to approach
this project as a team effort and that both capital and long term
costs are clearly understood, resulting in an efficient and
economical building. She asked for assistance from the Committee
in identifying the mission of the library upon its completion.
Ms. Powers stated the proposed operational costs will be
based upon current market values . She spoke to the seasonal
nature of the Town. Helene DeFoe stated the library conducts
two-thirds of the business conducted in the months of July and
August. Mr. Lucker suggested expansion should be based upon
the ten month year-round cycle, absorbing the other two summer
months into the operation.
In support of the library expansion Mr. Lucker reported that
overall library use is up, the number of books being published is
higher than ever before, and that book sales are up throughout
the country, He also noted that there will always be a need to
assist the public in utilizing technological information.
-3-
