Mashpee Public Lire"'
P.O. Box 657
l ashpee, Ufa 0264
Circulation for February 2006 was 10,452 items, That exceeds last February by
576 items, our year -to-date total Is 90,228 items.
The early part of February was very rha-Ilenging. We had two people out sick for
a geek, overlapping another staff person's vacation. Debbie .Umina was
reactivated to Delp us through the worst pert of the shortage. We continued to
have people out sick throughout the month but we're able to cope without extra
help because it was one person at a time. Hopefully, the worst is passed and
everyone is healthy again.
I have spent much of my time this month involved in the final design development
of the new library. We've been meeting b reekly to fine tune the basic design
that.we started with. We'are currently at a good place with the design but the
layout is still subject to change. The architect has been awaiting a code change
which would eliminate the need to have two emergency stairs in the building. The
current design reflects this. if the code change isn't finalized within a month: he
►ri if have to insert the second set of stain into the plan. This will alter the size of
staff work space and will require relocating the upstairs restrooms. I'm hoping the
code change comes through and we are able to retain the current layout. The
staff and ] have spent several hours reviewing the plans and have come up with
a layout that works very well operationally. The staff and the committee are very
plesed with the.design so I'm hoping we don't have.to alter it.
The Mechanical Engineers, Garcia, G luska and DeSouza (GGD), reviewed five
types of heating. systems and recommended that we use a heat induction
system. This system uses a single fan to craw fresh air in and high pressure
nozzles throughout the building circulate the heated or cooled air. The
advantages to the system are fewer roving parts, lower installation costs,
quieter, more comfortable, and very easy to maintain. The unit is very energy
efficient so the installation and operation rave in as the most cost effective for
our project.
The committee had a lot of questions.for the engineers and expressed a desire to
visit a site that actually had an induction HVAC System. The system has been
used in y
Europe for man ears but had only been used in the U.S. for about
years. GGD arranged a site visit to a school in Plymouth and had the Customer
Service e F epresentative meet us there to answer questions. We were very
impressed with the system and the subcommittee recommended incorporating
this system into our design. The P&CC met on February 26th and voted to d with
y g
the induction system. I've inuded an article from the Mashpee Enterprise which
more fully explains the benefits of the induction system.
