The utility costs are projected at the save level in both versions. I
_ e will be
opening a new 2Z,00 square foot librrary running for sic months of the
fiscal year. We are currently operating in 3,400 square'feet bf leased space. We
have been in the leased space less than six months. We have no historical data
that can accurate predict energy usage for an entire fiscal year, I used the
actual
figures for one quarter of a year in the temporary space. l divided y four to et
an average monthly cost. Id multiplied that b six to project the ev rJ}.Yyr cost in the
7/
temporary library for six months of FY 2010.
" . •r
The new library is 6.5 tires as large as the current temporary space. l compared
the cost of energy at Torn Mail and the council on Aging buildings to et a better
otter _
sense of the energy costs for a lever building. I examined their earl bud
. - yearly et
figures for FY 20 9, provided by the Town Accountant as part of the cost basis.
The CoA building seemed a closer match to the new fibra than Ton
. Hall. We
will have approximately six months. of energy costs in the new library. The he rrr
library is twice the size of the CoA, so l have used their total energy amount for
sig months for trice the square footage.
In version two o iris 20103 Y 2010 Bud et Ili i
bra , l
have included the cost of two additional positions to staff a much larger
library.
The staffing situation. is similar to the circumstances the Fire Department
encountered when trying to open the Fire substation with existing staffing.
.
Although _
ough ire have one neer facility unlike the Fire Department's two buildings),
the neer library is a two story building requiring staffing on both floors. Having two
floors is not dissimilar to staffing to buildings.
The Children's'Room In the old fibra
r'y was a section of a sinle lame open area.
The new library includes a separate.Children's Wing. The room is closed
off from
the main library space for security and noise control. circulation staff at the
main
desk cannot provide coverage for the Children's Circulation desk. We need a
minimum of two staff in the children} Department to pr'ovidia coverage in this
room.
x
The current staffing level person) would leave
. the Children Librarian alone in
a 5,000 square foot room. Her responsibilities include assisting children to find
nd
information, supervising proper use of the room, ordering collection materials,
and conducting children's programs. In addition, she does outreach to the
schools and hosts return visits from the students. 'without additional stafrrn
she _
would have to run to the Circulation desk as well. Even-the best employee coul
d
not perforin all of that and deliver quality service to our children. We need a
Circulation Assistant to perform circulation-activities checkout children's
books,
cover the phones and help monitor use of the room.
" r
2
