PV
Libraries
that have built or renovated /expanded older buildings' find circulation
increases substantially
,after construction projects. I have examined three library
building projects from similar sized .communities; Harwich, Ashland and Lakeville.
Harwich's library was an expansion and renovation- completed in I*Y 1998. 1 have
included Harwich in the chart even though it predates the -other construction
projects by quite a bit because it is the only Cape com munity simiIar to Mash pee
;
with a recently completed building. Like the others, it experienced increased
usage after construction. Ashland and,Lal eville guilt new libraries in FY 2005.
I've included. Harwich's statistics for. Y 2006 as a more up-to-date comparison to l
the -other communities and to shove that the growth in usage continues to this
day. In all cases, the libraries experienced a healthy percentage increase in
circulation and holdings (collection size) in the year following construction.
The chart shows the population size, hours open, total circulation, circulation by
hours en number of re istered orro rers li brary card holders) and holdings
(collection size . It's interesting to note that Mashpee's current circulations per
hour (63.35) are greater Ahan Ashland's after their construction project.
Mashiee's current circulation is comparable to Ashland and Lakeville even
p
though Mashpee's sta. istics are preconstruction.-
Mashpee has always been a
much busier library than its size would indicate. It ranks in the top ten CLAMS
leaders in circulation each year. After the new building is completed,' Mashpee's
circulation will be in the range of Harwich's circulation. I have included a -chart of
CLAMS" libraries' circulation for Y 2008. You can see that Mashpee is one .of
the busier libraries although it is physically smaller than most of the other.
libraries. The number of registered' borrowers increased at all the libraries,
following construction, showing more people were using the new libraries. .
circulation per hour increased as well, showing the need for additional staffing to
provide service for the increased crowds. Falmouth's circulation for the first
quarter of FY 2008 was 88}428 chile they were in temporary quarters). Their
circulation for the same time period this year .1,36,100 now that the building
roFedt is corp feted and they are back in the library. The difference is a 54%
increase, similar to ghat Mashpee can expect.
