Mashpee Public Library
P 0 Box 657
Mashpee MA 02649
Circulation in September was 9,750 items, compared to 9,887 items last
September. Year-to-date circulation is 36,895 items compared t0 35,579 in 2009.
We are slightly behind lack September but are ahead 4p/o for the fiscal year.
During the summer, the library issued 287 new library cards.
Y completed the second portion of the library's annual state report. This section
of the report that shows financial compliance and affirms the library met all other
standards. Mashpee met the standards again this year. Submission of this report
and meeting the standards determines if a library is certified each fiscal year.
The town is holding an Ethics Workshop on November 6h. There are a number of
changes to the ethics laws and a new requirement that all employees, boards
and commission members pass an online test on the ethics laws. The November
workshop will discuss the changes and testing requirements. Email Kathleen
Moore at BOS@ci.mashpee.ma.us if you plan to attend the workshop. `
The Board of Selectmen has announced this year's liaisons, and Terrie Cook is
the library's liaison, As such, she sat in on last month's security meeting. Joyce
Mason, Chief Rodney Collins, Barbara Notarius and i also attended. The chief
mentioned that his citizen's community policing group might be of assistance to
us when the new building opens. They might help by being eyes and ears,
pa ularly on the second floor. If any situations arose, they would alert staff
rather than try to deal with a problem themselves. Chief Collins is also willing to
do some training with volunteers on safety-issues and things to watch for. I
asked if the police could keep an eye on the parking lot in case people loiter or
create problems outside. He though it might be possible as they pass by.
Although the meeting didn't solve our staffing problems, it was a productive
meeting and the suggestions may contribute to a safer environment.
The new budget forms will be distributed this month. Joyce's preliminary
message to the departments is to prepare a leve! funded budget plus a 2%
reduction budget. All forms will be submitted electronically instead of preparing a
hard copy as well. I will be looking to Joyce for guidance on utilities for thenew
building. We will have to budget for a much larger facility.
The Ubrary is participating in Mashpee Reads; a community wide program to
encourage reading, particularly for children. Some of the events willbe tied to
the library's opening. The first event is a book swap at Town meeting. III keep
you advised of future events.
