Mashpee Public Library
P 0 Box 657
Mashpee MA
Circulation in January was 8,701 items, compared with fast year's
circulation of 8,992. In spite of the recent the cold snap, circulation was
close to last January's figures. Y T-D circulation was 73,383, compared to
70,781 last year. This year exceeds last year's figures by 2,602 or 4%.
We completed tagging the adult book collection. Thanks to our volunteers,
we are about 90% through the children's collection. One of the moveable
work pads that we will use at Steeple St was delivered to the library. A
technician is coming to program it next week. This will allow us to have 2
people do conversion at a time. The rest of the 3M equipment is stored at
the DPW building for safety. We had no room at Joy St. and Rick Pomroy
was reluctant to have it stored at Steeple St. until the construction is
completed. He had reservations about damage or about parts going astray
since access to the building is still open to vendors and workmen.
We have a number of volunteers working on the DVD cleaning project.
We're about 60% through the DVDs and will do the music CDs and audio
books once the DVDs are done. Converting media is more complicated
than doing books so well only ask the most experienced volunteers to
work on them.
Since we last met, the elevator was approved for occupancy. It needed a
live phone before it could pass inspection and be used to transport the
book stacks up to the second floor. The book stacks in the children's room
are complete and the frames for the adult stacks are now being installed.
Having them in place reduces the cavernous look of the areas. Patrons will
see the space as cozy and comfortable once the collections are in place
and the furniture is delivered.
The counters and millwork (stair railings, breadboard on walls and
baseboards) are being constructed on site. The effect of everything
coming together is truly stunning. Well be reviewing signage proofs next
week. A computer management system was chosen and David DelVecchio
is coordinating those details.
We had significant staff shortages this week. Bridget was on vacation and
another staff member was hospitalized and is out for the week. I'm
grateful we were still in Joy St but it is an example of what happens when
we have such thin coverage. I can't imagine what we would have done in
those circumstances in the new library.
