Mashpee PLibrary
4 Steeple St
. Box 657
IVlashpee IIIA 02649
508-539-1435
Circulation for the month of September 2010 totaled 14,665 items. That exceeded last year's total of
91750 by 4,915 items. The monthly total increased 5 over the same time period last year. Circulation
for the first two fiscal months is 4%ahead of FY 2009. It's interesting to note that the circulation in July
2009 totaled 14,264.We issued 164 library cards in September, bringing the total to 1,789 since we
opened. You will note that this September,a non-peak month exceeded July 2009.
Last month, one of the trustees expressed interest in how much the meeting rooms are booked.Wa had
17 meetings scheduled in either the conference morn or larger Events Room. There were a fever groups
that we were not able to accommodate because the time slot they needed was already booked. We had
45 uses of the small study rooms on the second floor. The study rooms have been very popular and
requests regularly exceed the number of morns available. I have been emailing out applications to
groups which expressed interest in raking reservations for a meeting space while we were working on
the policy. Several groups have followed thr ugh on the process and reserved space.
We rare into a small problem with the Safe Child Policy. l e discovered a gray area concerning leaving
children who are not old enough to use the Young Adult Room. They were the 10-11 gears old and a few
i
parents were leaving them unattended in the Adult Section. The staff felt that could lead to problems
and when they mentioned it to one parent; she said the policy didn't say shecouldn't leave them
upstairs. Our original intent was to allow them unattended in-the Children's Room. If they are using the
Adult space, they should be accompanied by a parent. We've revised the policy to clarify that.
' I have submitted an application for the Architectural issue (December 2010) of Library Journal. Libraries
built since the last issue are eligible to submit applications. Stewart Roberts provided me with library
i
photos on a disc to accompany the application. I am hoping our library will be chosen to be featured in
magazine.
I have completed the state financial report and submitted it online today to the Board of Library
Commissioners. I-arra just starting the annual budget, due November 1".The salary portion includes step
increases and longevity payments. The directions say that the hiring freeze is still in place but I will
submit the created positions if they pass town meeting. The expense portion of the budget will be level
funded. Except for the new positions, the budget will look pretty much the same as this year.
i
