Defoe
From: Janet Burke
: Monthly Report
The statewide summer reading program, "Go Green at your library" ran for eight weeks this
summer. We were "green" by eliminating all paper—the entire program was online. Children
omitted to read 20 minutes per day for at least 5 days a week and recorded their time on a
online reading leg. When children showed us their log online, they received a small prize for
their reading effort and for visiting the library. The final prize was a coupon for a free ice cream
one from Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlor. This is the fourth year that Mark Lawrence from Polar
Cave has generously sponsored our summer reading program. A total of 1.34 children and
teens participated this year. In 2009 we had 219 children and 5 teens participate. I believe the
decline in participation.i due to parents' reluctance to use the online component.
Each week we have displayed a "Green Fact of the Week". Children read the fact and then they
carp enter a raffle for a "`Go Green at your library" prize. Participation has been:
August 7t" Raffle Entries 32
August 14th Raffle Entries 2
August 21't Raffle Entries 1
Luis Catala, a Ma tepee parent whose native language is Spanish, is volunteering his time at.the
library this summer conducting a Spanish Immersion class for preschoolers.
