4 ,
Y
i
.Mash.Mashpee Public Library
4 Steeple 5t
P 0. Box 657
Mahpee MA 02649
508-539-1435 FAX 508-539-1437
Circulation for the month of July 2011 totaled 18;315,which was a drop from last July-s tally of 20,999
items. Mashpe continues to be the third busiest library on the Cape and Islands, behind Falmouth and
Harwich.
Cape Cod Alarm Company care to Library and spent a full day working on the systems. An outside
camera has been installed over the Steeple St. boob drop to monitor activity. The technicians also
adjusted all of the internal cameras to increase the scope of coverage and fine tuned the picture gpality.
The technicians suggested that we might benefit from relocating one of the two cameras located in the
Children's Room to capture activity in the central area of the room. I spoke with Catherine Laurent
about the possibility of this.option, and she agreed to schedule the work, which will be covered by the
DPW.- The technicians are also working n perfecting the timing mechanisms which control the
automatic locking and unlocking of the external doors. There is some technical malfunction in the
system, but they are working to identify it so that the process will operate smoothly.
r
The July 19 training scheduled with the representative from 3M was postponed due to an issue with
preparing the necessary lists of holdings. The representative-did visit the Library and measured the
entrances for security gates. He subsequently forwarded a bid for$27,200 for the entire project. If the
Library decides to move forward, it would need to secure at least two more bids before roving to
contract with seniles from anyone.
The Library was pleased to receive from Milton Tei hman, a bronze sculpture titled, "Vile Are All One."{ It
f will be mounted on the top of the time capsule in the Library lobby. I met with Catherine Laurent and
showed her the sculpture and asked if the DPMI staff would be able to complete the installation. After
examining the nature of the sculpture, vire both agreed that the carpentry work might best be
completed by a carpenter experience in mounting artwork. Mr,Tei hman has offered to provide the
name of a contact that has worked with him in the past, and would do excellent work ata reasonable
price,
While on the topic,of artwork, the library's public piece of art, commissioned by George Silva and Tedi
March and sculpted by their son, Benn Silva, has proved to be a maintenance challenge for the DPMI
staff. It is located adjacent to the children's reading garden and was installed directly into the ground
with no base. Weeds and undergrowth have been growing under and around the base, which takes
away from the beauty of the piece. At some point in the future, the DPW staff will investigate the
options for filling in the ground under the statue to prevent the unsightly growth of weeds from
creeping into the sculpture.
