I '
i
On October 1 , I attended the monthly Town Department Head meeting. The budget packages
for next year were distributed, and each department has been asked to submit one level funded
budget for next year. The Town Manager dict instruct the group to construct their budgets and
make a case for any expenses that might be added. The budget is due on November 18, and the
follow up meeting with Town officials is December 2. I will be devoting much of my time
during the next two weeks to completing the budget proposal.
During the meeting the statewide changes to healthcare insurance were also discussed and
inf rm tion has been sent to each employee via US. mail. The' new rates and premiums have not
yet been established by Cape-Cod Health Care, so the total impact ofthe new law is yet to be
determined.
On October 20, the Library hosted the monthly 1 lashpee CARES meeting. I am serving on the
kick-off event committee and will be working to identify possible sponsors-for an April event.
The purpose of the group is to promote healthy and positive lifestyle choices to the young people
in the community. A survey will soon be released to students and their families which will
attempt to set benchmarks for community norms.
On October 26, four members of the staff attended a clay brig training session on el eaders and
the future of eBooks in the Library. It was an informative session, which raised marry questions
about lending models, costs, and best practices. The Library currently owns one Nook Color,
which the staff`can use for practice. We plan to purchase additional devices, including a Kindle
in order to help the expected flood of patrons who will receive eleaders this holiday season.
I met with Steve Brown, the facilitator who will be working with us as move through the
Strategic Planning process. We are hoping to have a preliminary meeting of the Strategic
Planning Committee in the month of November, but this may prove difficult with holiday
schedules fast approaching. I will keep you all informed of the schedule after speaking with the
committee members.
Catherine Laurent of the DPW continues to be very responsive to the Library's needs. The
statue and plaque have been installed on the time capsule, the plagues at the front circulation
desk have been remounted, the fire alarms were tested.this month, and the plaque honoring
Helene and Ed Defoe has been ordered. I will talk to Catherine about the landscaping questions
that are being Posed in regard to some new planting.
The to new laptops were delivered by the Town IT department, and they have been actively
working to strengthen our levels of computer security and ensure that our data is properly bade
up. This is a particular challenge because Library computers are not part of the Town network
clue to conflicts with the CLAIMS software and servers. we are moving toward compliance with
town policies in this area.
5
' I
