On January 19,the Library offered a group training session for patrons interested in learning
more about their Nook eReader devices. The session took place in the Event Room and was lead
by tech volunteer, Tom Weaver. Tom did an excellent job of preparing materials and hand-outs
for the class, and his delivery of the material was outstanding. The participants all received a
solid introduction to the world of eBooks. The Library continues to offer 45 minute, one-on-one
training sessions two afternoons a week to allow Tom to address individual user needs.
On January 20, I met with Kate Watt, the Marketing Director for Mashpee Commons. Kate
assumed this role in June 2011, and was eager to discuss ways in which the Library and
Commons could work together. The primary focus of our conversation was to review a proposal
submitted by the Castleberry Fairs Craft group. The group submitted a proposal asking to be
allowed to use the Green (owned by Mashpee Commons) across the street from the Library for a
Craft Fair, and in return would make a$2000.00 donation to the Library. The Library does not
have to provide any personnel or equipment, and will be given a free booth at the event. After
discussion, with Jack Kowalski, Mashpee Commons management, and Town Manager, Joyce
Mason, it was determined that there were no objections to this proposal. I will work with the
staff at Mashpee Commons as needed, and the fair will be held on August 4 and 5.
In addition to the Craft Fair, I discussed additional ways that the Library and Mashpee Commons
might partner on fundraising or program opportunities. Kate was very encouraging and we plan
to continue meeting to build the relationship.
On Saturday, January 21, the Library closed at 12 Noon due to a snow storm.
On January 24, I attended a meeting of the CLAMS Digital Resources Committee. The
Committee is small group of Library Directors and librarians who are charged with the task of
identifying online resources that should be considered for purchase by the CLAMS system. The
committee members will locate and compare various offerings in the areas of online language
tutorials, databases, genealogy services, and downloadable materials, and work with the vendors
to negotiate a favorable group discount for interested CLAMS libraries. The CLAMS system
and its members are very keenly aware of the public's demand for 24/7 accessible online
resources and are working to ensure that we meet those needs.
On January 25, I met with local author and editor, Steve Pastore to discuss the possibility of
establishing a Classics Book Discussion group. Steve has volunteered to use his teaching and
writing experience to lead the group. He runs similar programs at other Cape libraries, and they
are very popular with patrons. After talking with other library directors who are familiar with
his programs, I plan to move forward and establish the group. He has been asked to fill out the
paperwork for a CORI background check, as do all volunteers, and we hope to launch the event
in the.coming weeks.
On January 26, I was interviewed by local NPR reporter and Mashpee resident, Sean Corcoran
for a five part series he is doing on Libraries in the 21"Century. He is interviewing a number of ,
