Y -
follow up on this, at the request of the Fire Department, and we are working to ensure that the
proper keys will be placed in the entry box.
The 311 dialing lies were tested and all staff was instructed on when to place a call to 311, and
what information to relay to dispatch. Captain Fellows vas concerned that the phones in the
Library do not appear to be programmed for use as an intercom system throughout the building,
as phones In other town buildingscan be used. I will be working with David Delvecchio and the
.IT Department to see if this feature can be added to the Library's phones.
1t was advised that the Library needs to neap out evacuation plans In case of emergency, and-
should also-consider a lockdown protocol in case of dangerous situations. we don't have the
capability to automatically lock all ofthe doors aria the electronic access system, and will need t
think about a plan that would deploy staff to manually lock all doors.
The crew provided lands on practice-with operating fire extinguishers, and ran down various
emergency situations that could require first aid. It was recommended that the Library have
adequate First Aid kits, purchase a defibrillator, and secure First Aid/CPR training for all staff.
The session with the members of the Fire Department was extremely informative and they
provided us with excellent guidance in many areas.
The Library staffthen attended a three hour customer service workshop provided by staff of the
Massachusetts Library System. working as a group, we were able to role play and discuss-
various scenarios and how to-effectively communicate with patrons on a range ofsensitive
topics.
During lunch the staff discussed the feedback generated by the Strategic planning Committee,
and largely agreed with the observations of the group. Although the staff would love to provide
additional hours and services to the community, most staff members realize the constraints of
funding,additional hours at this point
Staff from the CLAMS offices joined us for the afternoon session, which included instruction for
staff members on modules of the Millennium Circulation System that they had not previously
used. I met with Office Manager, Janet Trask and Circulation Staff to review our guidelines on
issuing library yards aad borrowing items. we will be amending some of our practices to make
the library more user friendly.
On June 6. I attended an American Libraries Association Safety in the Library Training at the
CLAIMS offices in Hyannis. CLAMS sponsored the ALA works op and invited all Cape and
Island Library Directors to participate. After the workshop, Library Directors discussed ways
that we might coordinate policies and share information to enhance safety and security in all
libraries.
