u ,
On May 14, I was interviewed by staff of the Massachusetts Library System as pert of their
organization's Strategic Planning Process. I was able to provide input on types of training and
services that might be most useful to' librarians working ars Cape Cod.
On May 16, I attended the CLAMS Digital Resources Committee meeting in the Hyannis
offices. The state has announced contracts for vendors who will be providing online database
content at the-statewide level. Unfortunately, the region received some unwelcome neves as the.
state has decided to stop paying for the online subscription to the Cape Cod Trines. As of June
, we will no longer be able to provide free access to the-gape Cod Tines online, or its archive
f stories. The CLAIMS Digital Resources Committee is exploring-the option of collectively
purchasing this'resource for the region, but so far the price quotes have been steep.
The committee i -also working with a vendor to use CLAMS central funds to provide online
access to Consumer Deports. This is one of the most requested resources and all Cape libraries
agree that it would be a worthwhile use' f the central funds to makethis available to.Cape
residents.
The first meeting of the Strategic Planning Committee was held on May 17, facilitated by Steve
Br vim. The meeting was well attended and participation was excellent. I will forward
summary of the findings compiled by Steve Brown as a separate attachment. The general f
consensus was that we are very fortunate to have a state of the art building, which boasts great
parking, environmentally friendly construction features, a central location, and is well used by
the community. The group also expressed a strong desire to see the Library open for more hours
each week (including Sunday afternoons); the meeting rooms made available for additional hours
and for expanded programming for all.age levels. There would be additi nal'costs and funding
associate with adopting any of-these initiatives. The next committee meeting is Thursday, June
14-from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
On May 22, staff from the Pharos company, which supplies the management software for our
public access computers, spent the morning working v ith'staff to streamline features of the
system in preparation for the summer. After reviewing the features and workflow, and
discussing with staff, purchasing a second self-check-out station for use on the second floor is an
option that I would like to pursue. This would be a purchase that could be.funded by resources
provided by the Friends of the Library. It would be very helpful in taking burden off the staff,
.particularly during the busiest months.
fur first staff evel pment day eras held on May 2 , and v a very beneficial to all staff. The
day began with a visit from Captain Fellows s acrd his crew from the l ashpee Fire Department.
One ofthe first things they discovered was that the key in.the outside lockbox, which only the
Fire Department can access, was actually unable to unlock the fire control panel in the lobby of
the building. That alone was a worthwhile discovery. I have contacted Catherine Laurent t
