---- - Some ofthe highight - `t i lec
w-inli ;
o Torn explained he had success in his prior a peri nce using public outreach and public accessing
of GIS system through public kiosks.
o Lolita asked: when money granted for GIS from Cable Board, will Cable Board be source for
funding everything for GIST Tom responded that he feels as GIS grows Town will have to make
it an established Department with a Town budget. Andrew stressed that he dopes 'Town is doing
this because there is no guarantee funding will be available after 2009.
o James Chisholm asked whether the schools will be sponsoring also since proclarnation states GIS
is going to the schools. Tom explained that is for one day only for GIS day.
Janes Chisholm commented that requested funding now takes you to point" ", but are you
planning further` Tom responded"yes". He added that the scanner was purchased and it is up
and rummng. James Moroney added that he saw the scanner and it is very impressive.
Andrew said he is not certain that GIS consulting services is something Cable Board can consider,
'tom explained that to get started we need someone with the knowledge to tell us how to convert
the pieces of our data going hack to 1991 and how to archive the data. Tom said over the years
there have been different updates made to the software and to convert to one standard efficiently
we need this consulting services expertise,
0 'tom advised that Cape Cod Commission is instituting a formal Cape-wide GIS group. He said
three-quarters of the towns on Cape have GIS system and more than one-half of them have
designated individual to run the system.
o David I elVecchio reminded the Board that ll ash ee is integrating the data from GIS into permits,
etc.
Lolita asked: f s.there maybe some"'home land"money to b applied to this GIS funding?
o James Moroney asked would towns have ability to use each other's data? 'Toni said"absolutely"'
and that is why towns are interested in doing this.
o How will GIS consultant impact data problem? Tom explained that GIS is in a format called
"shapefiles"and now we're up to fourth formatted GO.data. Consultant services will move from
" hapefiles"to GO database.
Andrew asked: Is GIS consulting under the realm of this Board; is it really disseminating
information to the public? Joyce Mason responded saying she thinks she would support it because
we've taken a system and brought it to a level we"ve never been at before and to.get us to where
we want to be it could be justified as a one-shot deal.
Lolita.commented that if Board continues to give money to CAIS (which she thins is a good thing)
but if Town is not going to be fundingJIS thea what has been accomplished` Joyce Mason said
it will be in Budget 2008, Selectmen are fury aware of the importance of GIS system and will
support it.
Motion: James Chisholm stated that inasmuch as we haven't had a meeting since, lune to expedite this
request he makes a motion that we recommend to the Board of Selectmen the amount of$19,098 for GIS
as presented by Tom Mayo; Jaynes Moroney seconded this motion; and the motion was unammously
approved,
Jinn Leonard commented from the audience. He said he had read a recent article in the New York Times
that Chicago made more money in 2 weeks than their GIS system cost because they saw pools, upgrades,
etc. that had not had permits and so they now got these revenues.J
Janes Chisholm asked Joyce Mason in long-range planning aside from these two dere(David and'tom)
did Joyce anticipate any further requests coming to the Cable Board. Joyce responded that they've asked
each Department and VAII know when they get each I epartn ent's feedback what the needs MMI be. Joyce
i
said also that David will begiving us a better idea of what will be needed. James Chisholm commented
that Lolita makes a valid int thaty ou can create all this stuff but then 1f ceding ends where are we.
r
