NEW BUSINESS <br /> Discussion with Mashpee Resident, Elana Doyle, Regarding Committee Involvement-Ms. <br /> Doyle was present at the meeting to express her interest in the Committee. Committee members were <br /> in receipt of her letter of interest and resume. Ms. Doyle indicated that she had grown up here on Cape <br /> Cod and recently purchased a home in Mashpee and was currently a stay-at-home mom. Ms. Doyle <br /> discussed her interest in affirmative action when she first witnessed discrimination in high school and <br /> learned more about the issue while studying Business in college. In addition, while working in <br /> banking, Ms. Doyle participated in special training for her work in the home loan process. Ms. <br /> Waterman noted that the Committee had discussed focusing on developing a more inclusive <br /> community. Ms. Doyle like the idea of community outreach to connect with the public. <br /> Discussion with Mashpee Resident,Louis Horner, Regarding Committee Involvement-Mr. <br /> Horner was present and Committee members were in receipt of Mr. Horner's application and resume. <br /> Mr. Horner indicated that he had become interested in the Committee after speaking with the Town <br /> Manager, Mr. Horner shared with the Committee some of his personal experiences he encountered <br /> dealing with discrimination and his ability to overcome many racial indignities over the years, as well <br /> as the book he wrote, Who Will Water the Flowers. Mr. Homer developed the first computer camp for <br /> children, training over 6,000 children. Mr. Horner established the most successful minority owned <br /> promotional marketing company in the Northeast. Mr. Horner expressed concern about social and <br /> racial indignities on the Cape and designed a t-shirt"We all went out in the sun, we all cast the same <br /> color shadow," which he suggested using as a fundraiser in Town. Additionally, Mr. Horner expressed <br /> an interest in developing a children's book, similar to"People"by Seth Spyer, but focus but to focus <br /> on Mashpee's culture and diversity and use it also as a fundraiser for the Town. Ms. Nadeau would <br /> take the books to review. <br /> Discussion with Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Councilwoman,Winnie Johnson-Graham, <br /> Regarding Committee Involvement-Ms. Johnson-Graham, Tribal Council member, was present to <br /> discuss her interest in the Committee. Committee members were in receipt of her letter of interest. <br /> Ms. Johnson-Graham stated that she was a life-long Mashpee resident. Ms. Johnson-Graham <br /> expressed her desire to break down the walls of racism and discussed her personal experiences in town <br /> regarding health impacts to her family living near Otis, and the death of her uncle due to police <br /> brutality during the 1980s, Ms. Johnson-Graham discussed her work with youth and pointed out that <br /> children did not know color, but also described her own experience with discrimination. Ms. Johnson- <br /> Graham described her interest in giving back to the Town and her involvement with a number of <br /> organizations and grant writing for Tribal projects. <br /> Discussion with Boys & Girls Club Representative, Regarding Committee Involvement- <br /> Ms. Landry requested that Ruth Provost submit a letter of interest to join the Committee and Ms. <br /> Provost requested that a designee be allowed as she was committed to a number of groups and would <br /> be unable to commit as a full time member. Regarding Bays & Girls Club, Ms. Provost stated that 38- <br /> 40% of their young people were traditionally under-represented, in a county with 6% minority. The <br /> majority of the students self-identify as multi-racial. Ms. Provost noted that her staff was also multi- <br /> cultural. Ms. Provost expressed her interest in being involved, to some extent, with a focus on <br /> accomplishing something with achievable goals. Ms. Landry recommended sending a letter to the <br /> Board of Selectmen including a request that either she or a designee be allowed to serve. <br /> Review Sample Affirmative Action Plans Submitted by Town Clerk-There was consensus <br /> to develop a mission statement for the Committee.
