be necessary within a twfour year time frame.
The Chairman recognized Cheryl Shepley, who made reference
to the condition of the Mashpee River, stating the eco system is
close to being destroyed. It was her observation that MCLP i
being short sighted by thinking they can provide a "quick f xtf
regarding the problem of nitrogen in the Mashpee River.
Ms. Shepley rade negative comments regarding the{ suggestion
of piping effluent into Nantucket sound. .
Mr.. storrs clarified, as Mr. Ku hinski had, that the
proposal to dispose effluent would not go into Nantucket sound,
but rather into an area of land where it would go through the
leeching process and ultimately be assimilated into Nantucket
Sound. Mr. Storrs .stated that MCLP would like to bb part of the
solution, not the problem.
Mr.. Kuchinski 8uggested that waters being pumped out of the
Mashpee Kiger watershed and into another watershed, might reduce
the base flow.
The Chairman recognized Beverly Kane, who stated that she
serves on the Watershed M r a ement Committee and noted that some
of the same issues are being discussed (dredging, possible
d.en.itrifi ation bylaws through the Board of Health, and
educational programs) . She stated the watershed Mana em nt
Coimittee is strongly pursuing these issues through the Sewer
Commission and examining alternative possible solutions.
Ms. Kane informed the Committee that there would be two
speakers present at the next watershed M nage ent Committee
Meeting, who will speak about eel grass, . loss of eel grass- beds,
and the impacts of nitro en. She expected Dr". Howes to attend
this and future, Meetings as well . Ms. Kane stated the watershed
Management Committee feels it is important to inform the voters
of the 'down, on a regular basis, how their money is being spent.
She stated additional monies will be requested at the October
'own Meeting. Ms. Kane further informed the Committee that Dr.
Howes has obtained additional funding th ou 4 a iou grants,
that the total cost for the two year project is approximately
$300, 000 . 00/$A50, 000 . 00 of which the Town will support in,the
amount of $150, 000 . 00 .
M . Kane al8o stated she is pleased to hear that MCLP is
beginning to put emphasis on becoming "part of the solution" .
M `. S t arts did take note that the wat ersl ed Management
Committee, Sewer Commission, and Mashpee Commons Advisory
Conittee are communicating and not working at cross purposes.
At this point, Mr. Kuchinski noted the financial aspect of
this project is very important and requires further examination.
 _
