LIBRARY ARY UILDING COMMITTEE PRESENTATION
Sheldon Gilbert, chairman of the Mashpee Library Building Committee (LBC), and Bonnie Barrett, like
Chairman, were introduced to the meeting. Sheldon Gilbert gave a-brief overview of the committee's
work, and presented progress to date on plans for the new Mashpee Public Library. Highlights from the
presentation follow.
Library site. The new library will be built on the site of the existing library, with proximity to Mashpee
Commons, and adequate in size for the facility being planned. The plot is on Town property, which
eliminated any necessary outlay of funds for the land. -ashpee Commons has the architectural review
rights for the new building, since the land belongs to the Commons. The LBC is working closely with Buff
Chace and the Commons as plans progress. The building will face south/southwest, thereby providing
ideal solar energy opportunities. The future site for the proposedChildren's Museum is directly adjacent
to the new library, with the Mashpee Fire, Police, Senior Center and Boys&Girls club facilities directly
across lit. 16 1. The plot affords 5000 ft behind the new building for future expansion. Approximately 73
parking spaces are planned to the back of the building. The new library will have 22,000 sq. ft. of space:
with no base: ent.
Total Estimated cost.
At the time the state grant application was submitted, the cost was estimated at$ . Milli. Of that cost,
the Town has authorized $3. r 1M; the state grant, for which the LBC is b on the waiting list, is
$2,551,741, to be announced in 2006. This leaves$1.7 lllillll to be raised by the committee to meet the
total cost. It is expected that the total cost of the project will be escalated b % to factor in the
anticipated increase in costs of building materials and labor.
