i
r
i
- By October'06 we should have a pretty good idea of the amount of rn nies that wi11 be
available for construction of the library. if the necessary funds are not realized to g
forward with the current plans, then based on the architect's estimated cost per square
foot, the monies available would give us a library of 9,000 square feet. The current
library has roughly 5,000 square feet. This falls well short ofwhat is sorely needed' for a
library the size of the Town of Mashpee.
- The Library Board of Trustees does not want to lose the$2.5MM State grant. The
Board also plans an additional campaign to adopt the approach taken by the Town of
Falmouth for its library expansion program.
- Joyce Mason has set September 1, 2006 as a deadline for the Library Building
Committee to come up with the necessary funds in order to move forward with its current
plans. if not successful, the library construction project will be moved from the Library
Building Committee and adopted by the Planning and Construction Committee.
The question was asked about alternative plans for a new library, in the event that the necessary
funds do not materialize for the current plan. Sheldon stated that there is a plan for a 17,300 sq..
ft. l'ibr'ary, which would cost$400 per square ft., or$6,920,00 to bu11d. This alternative plan also
includes demolishing the existing library. The Library Building Committee carefully siudied the
advisability of building around the existing structure and found that it was not feasible; cost-wise.
Sheldon.clarified that the lard is owned by the Town, and can only be used for a library. These
terns were agreed upon by Mashpee Commons and the Town at the time the Commons sold the
land to Mashpee, and will be in effect until 2016.
Catherine Laurent will confer with Joyce Mason to confirm the final date for the existence of the
Library Building Committee.
#3. Mashpee Tourist center. Steve Cools reported that he and Sevin Bhac ett are working on
designs for the new Tourist Center.
#4. coombs school Bathrooms. Janice Mills reported that the drains had been located, and
are in the process of being repaired. Backup bathrooms are available in case the bathroom
Under repair are not ready for use by school opening day.
Gene Smargon again welcomed Sheldon'Gilbert to the committee, and emphasized that here
should be no animosity demonstrated among committee members. Sheldon stated that he was
pleased to be included on the Planning & Construction Committee, andvas happy to serve.
The next meeting-of the Committee was scheduled for Tuesday: September 5, 2006, :00 PM at
Town #a11. As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Ina G. Sc l bohrn
F ec ord'ingi ecretary (for Jean Giliberti
3
