ENERGY UPDATE
10-8-09
4
Renewable wind Projects
Large Scale Wird Turbine
The Town received a grant through the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative MTS
for completion of a grind turbine feasibility study on Town lands. Eight locations were
evaluated by Weston & Sampson, the consultant for the project.' The initial investigation
found only 2 of the 8 locations to be feasible because ofFederal Aviation Ad i i tr.ation
(FAA) height restrictions. These two locations—1lashpee High/Middle School and
South Cape Beach—were presented to the Board of Selectmen at their meeting on
October 5h. The BOS voted to focus further evaluation on the High Middle School
location.
Clean Enemy Choice Fund
The Town has approximately $17, 0 available through the Clean Energy Choice CC
Fund (monetary match for purchase of"green" electricity by Mashpe properties). The
program has been discontinued and the funds must be co=- itted by the Town for
imp lernentation of a clean energy project Ioverber The Selcctnenvoted
n October 5hto use these funds.for the purchase oft o Windspires, small vertical axis,
ground-mounted wind turbines. The Windspires will be located at the Mashpee MashWelcome
Center on Route 130. The to30-foot tall turbines will generate up to 4,000 kWh o
electricity annually or approximately '3 of the building's electrical use. The Town i
finalizing costs for the purchase and installation of the Windspires. The project may be
combi ed with a rebate to allow purchase of a third turbine.
Renewable Solar Projects
Solar Photovoltaic Systems on Town Hall and Senior Center
A.Request for Bids will be released within the next week for the installation a
combined 80 kW system on roofs of the two buildings. The project will be funded
through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA.). A private company will design, permit,
procure, install, and maintain the systems on the two buildings for a multi-gear period.
The company wil1 receive any incentives from the Comrnonvealth Solar program for the
installations. The Town will purchase the electricity generated by the panels for the
duration of the PPA. for a fixed rate of$0.15 per kWh. Upon the expiration of the PPA,
the Town will own the systems.
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) ysten at HilMil shoo
A site assessment was recently completed for installation of PV panels on the
High/Middle School roof`: 1t was determined that up to a 262 kW system could be.
,installed. The Ton has submitted a request to the Cape & vineyard Electric
Cooperative CVEC for funding of a system. The Town will also be submitting a
preliminary application for funding through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Block Grant through MA Executive office of Energy and Environmental Affairs
