cr k1+
ir
I
* SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEE'T'ING UST 10 , 1992 PALL.
9
` focus on the Cape Cod W .mpanoag Tribe, and ire l ve said
before, our program has been planned with members of the
Tribal Council and most of the activities in the program
itself in the events we have scheduled for the 26th and
7th of Sept mbe r will be carried out by members of the
Mashpee Tribal Council in the community and the Mashpee
community as a whole.
This program began to .take shape when a were planned it n
in
n the early-months this year, it became obvious that
h
the most appropriate place to have such a program would
S` be here in Mashpee, which is the center of the tribe
,5" ;+ r the Wampanoag tribe is almost. entirely go to the Mashpee
schools. So we approached the school adminstration i
.'
May, At that time, e were asking for tie Coombs
School, but later on the advice of Joan Tavares we
{ decided the Middle School would be more appropriate for
the program we have in mind. We were weren' t able to k
get on the agenda in June, At the July meeting, as ..you
all know, the School. Committee deferred a decision on
,- our request until the August meeting, We have, at this ,
a
point, done everything we can to inform you about our
-r
program and responded to your request at the last Y t
meeting to provide information on the content of the
program. We've done that. We have, as you kn6w p the w
endorsement of the Tribal Council, we have the
:w endorsement of the Director of the Indian Education :
program, and now more recently, we have support of the
Mashpee Selectmen. At this point, we' re really at the
limit of our time because we have to. . . I 'm sure you can
understand. . .we have to print tickets, we have to print
registration forms, flyers , all the material that has to
go into the advance distribution, publicity, and advance
i
tcket sale . . is still. something like six weeks This
Y
has been a fairly Long process, , longer than we thought
it would be and as I say we need to have a go ahead on
it tonight andwe ' re asking again for your approval o
x. this program. "
Mr . Consal i thanked Mr. Lilienthal and asked for ?
: Committee responses.
r . etti said have. questioned why did you select
iashpeehe% are a smaller facility We do not have
an auditorium+ e are not c --rally located. fou
could have' approached Sandwich , which is right off of
Route 6 , which would be better Located. They have a
huge auditorium and a cafeteria. you could have
approached Barnstable , which certainly is centrally
located and has a large auditcium and cafeteria and
r certainly more classrooms and more custodial help. So I
F Y
would like to have you respond to Why you selected
F Vias
hpee. 1'
}ir
