5 I
1 II
f
a
MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE - SPECIAL MEETING JANUARY 20, 1994
PAGE 2
Discussion ensued regarding the plowing responsibilities at the
schools. It was felt that the DPW is responsible for the plowing
a -they plow all other town buildings. Dr, DeMoura will discuss
this issue with DPW Director Greg Taylor.
Mrs, Dunivan asked if volunteers could be utilized in lieu of
hiring teacher assistants and library aides. Dro DeMoura thought
that this could b an option, Also, Mrs a DUnivan suggested g".ving
students the
choice of going to study periods or to the Library and
help out there. Perhaps a work group could be formed..
firs e Dunivan questioned the salary of the Grade 5-8 special.
education teachers Dr. DeMoura responded saying it is difficult
to find special education teachers on bachelors step 1 . An
individual with a masters degree is preferred for that area. He,
however, will make an attempt to hire a bachelors candidate if this
position should open up.
Mrs. Dunivan asked about the $38,000 earmarl ed for the home
economics and industrial arts programs. Dr. DeMoura said that
although some supplies still remain from the programs in the past,
the money would be spent for additional supplies and maintenance of
equipment.
Discussion rgardingthe 25-day remedial summer program followed
with Dr. DeMoura stating that some students at both schools are not
performing as well as they should, thus, the implementation of this
program. All Committee members agreed, although $24,000 would be
devoted to pay for four math teachers and four reading teachers,
transportation would not be included. M . Gibbs thought this
program would be a better alternative than the learning centers
saying, "we` e got to wale up and realize that We're losing our
kids, "
Mr. Consal.vi suggested that some of the audio-visual equipment is
getting old and should be replaced. Dr. DeMoura agreed that we
should begin that process as needed.
Dr. Petty. once again expressed her thoughts on the autonomy of the
school department's budget and that the Finance Committee has no
say in how school money is spent. That the Finance Committee gives
the school department a bottom lime figure and that is all.
The "bottom line" for the proposed FY95 school department budget a
of this evening was $7 ,529,530 .
Dre DeMoura excused himself at 6:25 p.m. to attend theTaxpayers '
Association meeting where discussion on the high school educational
specifications was taping place at 6:30 p.m,,
