Town of Mashpee
N },i
F(Aulqy` 16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone - (508) 539-1438
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting---November 16, 2017
The Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava Costello, Chair, at
4:40 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, Brian Hyde, and Nancy Soderberg.
Commissioners not Present: Rosemary Burns Love, Gordon Peters, and Joan Tavares-Avant
First order of business was to Welcome Richard P. DeSorgher who was appointed to the
Commission by the Board of Selectmen on Monday, October 30, 2017. He has recently moved
to Mashpee from Medfield, MA, where he was the Town Historian. He is already actively
working with Earl Mills and Ava on a project to research and commemorate all Mashpee
veterans in all the wars.
Nancy made a motion that we approve the Minutes from our October 18th Meeting with a
correction. Earl Mills should have been listed as the Chairman of the Historic District
Commission. The motion was seconded by Brian Hyde.
Reports: Ann reported that the Walker Display System that we had purchased has been
assembled with the able assistance of Richard who was very familiar with it. He came in to
assemble the parts and help with getting our framed maps hung up on display.
Nancy has written up a narrative regarding all the maps we have on display. We plan to mark
the maps with a small card identifying the dates of each of them.
Richard has filed a Letter of Intent with the State Historical Records Advisory Board, (SHRAB),
requesting grant funding available for Veterans Memorials in the amount of$15,000. Ava has
submitted a request to the CPC for matching funds for the Veterans Memorial project. Ava,
Richard and Brian were going to attend the CPC meeting held just after our meeting to request
the CPC funding. These initial funds are being requested for a Memorial recognizing Mashpee
Revolutionary War Veterans and designating those who gave their lives for our Independence.
We have some preliminary research done by Joanne Ferragamo, but she did not cite her
sources. Richard will try to check many different sources to get accurate records of the names
of all of our war veterans.
Ava is continuing to work on the Signage Project. She meets at least once a week with Earl
Mills, Chairman of the Historic District Commission.
