'of, to Vi( i
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Mossachusetts 0264-9
Telephone - (508) 539-1438
IN BPEE FUST IAL NM BION
Minutes of Meeting—May 24, 2017
The Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order in the Archives 8:40 am by
Nancy Soderberg, Chairperson.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Rosemary Burns Love, Brian Hyde, and Nancy
Soderberg.
Commissioners not Present: Joan Tavares-Avant and Gordon Peters.
Guests Attending: Richard York, Director of Natural Resources and Shellfish Constable for
Mashpee, and Frank Lord, former Historical Commissioner.
First order of business was to approve Minutes from our December 23rd meeting. Brian Hyde
made a motion to accept the Minutes as presented and that motion was seconded by Rosemary
Love.
The second order of business was to review the request made by Richard York of the Shellfish
Commission to determine if the home of Horatio Amos, located at 701 Great Neck Road South,
could be designated as historically significant to the Town of Mashpee. During our discussion of
this property, Brian Hyde recused himself from this item of business because he is part owner of
the property being considered for purchase. The Town of Mashpee is considering purchasing
this property for use by the Shellfish Commission with CPC funding. The home is listed in the
Mashpee Comprehensive Survey, PAL Report of 1999, Number 1065. It is also listed in the
Massachusetts Cultural Resource Information System MA RIB} database.
Rosemary prepared a descriptive history of the property for us to review. Richard York
described what the use of the building would be, namely the first floor of the historic home would
be renovated for office space with a display area and would be open to the public at certain
times. The educational display would show how oyster farming/culture is being used for
cleaning up the algae blooms in our local ponds. It would show some of the marine science
involved which would be of interest to the public. Mr. York suggested the Commissioners create
a history of the building for display there as well. Rosemary moved the motion to designate the
Horatio Amos home as a historically significant building in the Town of Mashpee. The motion
was seconded by Ava Costello, and was unanimously approved by the Mashpee Historical
Commission.
