wdp
T0: Mashpee School Committee
FROM: Mashpee High School Council
DATE: February 15, 1
TOPIC: FY97 BUDGET
As a group concerned with the educational quality of all of our programs,
we would hope that the final school budget would reflect the desire to
forward a budget that is necessary to fund all apropriate programs in the
town of Mashpee.
However because we feel that as a high school council, we have the
responsibility to at feast consider those items that it reduced would
prove detrimental to the opening of Mashpee High School, we would like to
recommend to the School Committee the restoration of the following'
positions to the proposed Mashpee School Budget for FY97:
(1) .5 secretary
(2) Grade 8 teacher
(3) Alternative Education teacher
It is our feeling that the central office in the new building will be a focal
point for both the operation of the new school as well as a reference point
for many inside and outside personnel. To enter the high school main
office and not be able to get appropriate attention would be very counter-
productive
ounterproductive to our operation.
The Grade 8 position if purely based on numbers may seem like a livable
situation on the surface, but if scutinized more closely may be a position
that we can ill afford to lose. In an effort to make Mashpee High School
attractive to both students and parents, we feel that it is essential to be
abbe to offer courses that would be appropriate for all students on either
end of the spectrum. To limit students' choices is to say that we are not
quite ready to offer what we need. Some projected courses would be in
jeopardy if we were to only consider an across the board class size.
