r <br /> MA HPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE <br /> EMERGENCY MEETING <br /> AUGUST 29, 1996 <br /> Minutes <br /> In Attendance; School Committee - Chairman Stephen Paxton, <br /> Kathleen Lynch, Theresa Cook, Janice Mills, Maryanne Macdonald. <br /> Administration - Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lincoln Ae DeMoura, <br /> Coombs School Principal Nick Feldman, Middle School Principal <br /> Robert Tippo, Elementary School Principal Louise Doyle, and High <br /> School Principal John Willia.ps, <br /> The meeting was called to order by Mr. Paxton at 7:03 p.m. in the <br /> Middle School Cafetoriur . <br /> Mr. Paxton introduced Dr. DeMoura who read aloud Building Inspector <br /> William Hauckls correspondence to the high school architect dated <br /> August 29, 1996 stating the following: <br /> " Te had another peak- of VOCs in the school treatment plant, The <br /> Board of Health is in contact with DEP and they will not issue a <br /> discharge permit until the lines are flushed and we ha-re a clean <br /> plant. ,As there is a strong possibility that we will have the <br /> similar problem when we open the remainder of the school, I will <br /> not issue any occupancy for the school until we have total <br /> occupancy. " <br /> With that announcement, Dir. DeMoura recommended to the ' School <br /> Committee to delay the opening of Grades 7, 8 and 9 in the high <br /> school until Monday, September 9th. During that time, Dr. DeMoura <br /> and high school officials must devise an alternative plan to house <br /> these students. He said it would be necessary to find 2 <br /> classrooms for at least a month as that is the time frame given to <br /> obtain total occupancy. He said high school students would move <br /> into the Middle School and Coombs School utilizing the gymnasiums <br /> and libraries as classrooms ' s well as in' creasing supervision j n. <br /> the hallways. Hiring 10-12 substitute teachers will be- required. <br /> Dr. DeMoura contacted Commissioner of Education Dr. Robert V. <br /> Antonucci who said the high school must make every effort to make <br /> up the three days missed. <br /> Mr. Paxton questioned asked if it would be possible to rent <br /> portable classrooms. - Dr. DeMoura said the school department went <br /> out to bid for these classrooms last spring and was unsure if <br /> rebidding would meed to be done. However, jLn discussions with <br /> companies who provide portable classrooms, Dr. DeMoura noted it <br /> would take four to six weeks to set therm up. <br />
