Page 11
Mashpee School Committee
Minutes-Regular Meeting
October 2, 1996
VII. 7.3 Homework Policy IKB
Specifically
A si Pursuant to the request of the School Committee,Dr. DeMoura
Unfinished commented on the IKB, IKE, and IIBH Policies. It was noted that
Business the three policies were forwarded to all teachers, and at this time, only
(continued) one response was received.
It was noted that Dr.DeMoura received additional communication from
Kim Costello with regards to the IKB Homework Policy. Mrs. Costello
stated that homework at the kindergarten level should be the discretion of
the teacher.
Dr.DeMoura indicated that all homework should be developmentally
appropriate. Kindergarten is an important grade, and is the beginning of
a child's school experience. Standard K policy recommends that all
parents read to their children twenty minutes per day.
Discussion followed with respect to homework. Mrs. Mills stated that
many parents are anxious to participate in their child's homework and
school activities. As curriculum changes, we should extend the information
to parents as they are an important learning reinforcement mechanism for
our students.
Ms. Cook added that an overview of curriculum should be introduced
at open house. Teachers should reiterate to the parent to be consistent.
It is important to realize that related activities can count as homework, and
homework assignments should not be given as busy work or as disciplinary
assignments.
Mrs. Lynch, and Mr. Paxton agreed that extended weekend homework
opposed to daily assignment tasks as presented in the previous policy
is a preferred option that warrants further review and consideration.
To improve our students academically, homework should be considered
as an extension of the classroom stated Dr. DeMoura who noted that the
previous policy did not contain any provisions for any level above Grade 8.
Dr.DeMoura requested to continue the homework policy for the high
school level at this time. *Approved.
Chairman Paxton requested to defer the acceptance to the IKB Homework
Policy until further review. Agenda item, next month.
