a
MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE '" SPECIAL MEETING
FEBRUARY 20, 1 - PAGE TWO
While reviewing the textbook line items of the budget, the
Committee questioned the math curriculum not being updated.
Discussion then followed with Mr. Paxton asking why would
transfer of funds be considered when the program has not been
updated? Dr. DeMoura answered that there is not enough money
to purchase all the fools that are needed. He Felt it is not a good
idea to "Piecemeal" the. math program by purchasing just some of
the Books. This would lead to one teacher- teaching one thing and
another teacher teaching something different. This could
ultimately lead to students falling through the cracks.
Ms. Macdonald said she did not understand why the money was
not budgeted for initially. She asked, "Whir did we vote on an
amount of money last year if it was not enough to corer the price o
all of the books?' Dr. DeMoura responded sabring when planning
the budget last year, it was necessary to make cuts and that the
cuts were rade from teaching materials and supplies. Ms.
Macdonald continued saying she still dial not understand why was
the money budgeted for if it was not sufficient to cover the cost of
the books.
In reviewing next gear's budget, IVIS. Macdonald noted that are
funds being, budgeted for new reading boobs. She felt it was not a
good idea to replace the math curriculum before moving on to the
reading program. Mrs. cook agreed.
Discussion followed on purchasing supplies and textbooks s for- next
year with this year's money.
Mrs. Lynch requested that the School Building Committee be
asked when the high school fields are going to be ready She said
them is no need to pay the contractor if the fields are not reader,
Mrs. cook suggested contacting the School Building Committee as
to their best guess. Dr. DeMoura will send a letter to the
Committee.
_J
