Mrs. Phyllis sprout discussed, who is a member of the reading curric- <br /> Public ulum committee, discussed the reading curriculum and the books being <br /> Forum used for the past five years which the reading committee is <br /> recommending to continue their usage. She commented on the expense <br /> of whole language and discussed the accountability of the school system <br /> if found as `under-perforn ing". she had submitted a list of questions in <br /> April asking for an overview of the state of the reading curriculum fry <br /> lashpee. As is polio, a $.2o per page charge as well as secretarial fees <br /> would be charged to answer her 26 questions as presented. she noted <br /> that as a member of the reading committee, she should not be charged <br /> any fees. <br /> Mrs. Sprout asked the School Committee not to accept the reading <br /> curriculum this evening until the sub-committee has reviewed it. <br /> Dr. DeMoura responded to some of Mrs. Sprout's concerns. He asked <br /> her why she labeled the program as a "whole language" program when, ire <br /> fact, it is not? she responded, "Because we are exposing children to <br /> words in a way that does not teach them to decode therm when <br /> presented." Dr. DeMoura countered her statement say that is not the <br /> criteria for whole language or a phonetic-based program. He stated, "our <br /> program is a blend." <br /> In response to Mrs. Sprout's concern about paying fees as per policy, he <br /> said with the infor-nxation she was seeking, it would take about a week of <br /> time to prepare the answers and charges were reasonable. <br /> rV1 4.1 High school Band - Memo l Day Pro�a�_ } Mrs, Lynch re- <br /> Ac owl- marked on the wonderful program clone by the High School band <br /> edgements as well as everyone who worked on that day. she also thanked the <br /> School Building Committee and noted the terrific sound system. <br /> .2 Web Page Development - Josh Coffin addressed the Committee who <br /> described how he and Adam carpenter devised a Web Page for the <br /> Leisure services Department.
