JOINT MEETING - SCHOOL COMMITTEE, BOARD of SELECTMEN, FINANCE <br /> COMMITTEE <br /> PAGE TWO <br /> Dr. DeMoura discussed the increase in special education per pupil costs from <br /> F` 3 ($6,955) to F '7 ($8,566). He said hese cosh are mandated by the state <br /> and the school department must comply. <br /> On the other hand, Dr. DeMoura explained that per pupil costs for regular <br /> education students have not markedly increased for several gears. For <br /> example, in FY 3, the regular education per pupil cost' was as $ while in <br /> FY97 that cost increased to only $4,246. Hevent on to explain that combined <br /> per pupil costs for special education and regular education was $4,717 in FY93 <br /> and in FY97 that cost rose to $5,042 while the state average is $6,000. Thus, <br /> lshpee is significantly below the state average. ; <br /> Dr. DeMoura then described the proposed special education legislation from <br /> the Massachusetts Association of School Committees <br /> Dr. DeMoura answered questions from m the Board of Selectmen and Finance <br /> Committee members regarding the budget and per pupil expenditures. <br /> The topic of new positions in FY99 was discussed. The school department is <br /> requesting the equivalent of an additional 37.95 new positions. Of these new <br /> positions, 2 .1 o were requested for the high school due to an additional grade. <br /> After Dr. DeMoura explained this request, Mr. Marsters suggested a graph <br /> showing homer these positions would break clown salary-wise. Dr. DeMoura will <br /> devise such a graph. <br /> The next joint meeting will be determined.
