w
MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE - REGULAR LAR MEE' ING — MARCID 4, 1998 PAGE
answered saying, The issue is one ofworking with kids and
working with parents ofkids.' He suggested the School Committee
establish a policy regarding class size and not to target one grade
s opposed to another grade. He explained the process where the
grade to be targeted, for example grade 2, and begin by discussing
the educational benefits of class size- with parents and then on a
voluntary basis parents would be asked t "volunteer" to change
schools from where their children are now to another school.
However, this does not mean that if someone volunteers, they
would be automatically selected because it is important to
maintain a similar profile of each grade in each school. About 10%
(15 students) would need to Iran fer and assignment of new
children would be controlled. -
}
Mrs. Lynch asked what if there were not enough people to
volunteer to transfers lir. DeMoura said he felt there would be
enough to volunteer to do this.
Dr. DeMoura said it is important for the school system to maintain
a plan.
Mrs. Lynch stressed that there would be no "involuntary"
transfers. Dr. r eMoura said that is the plan, however, the School
Committee had asked for a plan, a plan has been made, the next
step is for the School Committee to approve the plan then it will be
implemented.
Discussion followed regarding this concept.
X. committee 10.1.
