it
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
June 18, 2018
Review of Preliminary Plans for Cotuit Road Sidewalk and Draina e Im rovements and of Options for
Cotuit Road/Route 130 Intersection Reali nment: (continued)
Jason Streebel of 240 Cotuit Road asked about the location of drainage improvements. It was noted that
3 to 4 areas are under review along Cotuit Road at Leeward, near Holly Way and Situate Road and
towards Somerset Road.
It was agreed the sidewalk is strongly desired in this area. Sidewalks would be created in a similar
approach to Great Neck Road North, 5' in width with a separation fiom the edge of the pavement. If the
pavement is less than 4' a 6"vertical granite curb would be installed on the right side.
Kathleen O'Connell, a resident of 227 Cotuit Road resides at the intersection of Route 130. Ms.
O'Connell indicated she has voiced concern regarding this intersection for 30 years and asked what side
of the street the sidewalk would be located. She was informed by the DPW Director the sidewalk would
be constructed on the easterly side, or the right side, the odd house number side. It was disclosed a
licensed arborist has identified a number of trees to be flagged in the right-of-way. Ms. O'Connell
related support of the plan and the need for a sidewalk in this very dangerous area. It was suggested that
additional signage be constructed with reduced speed limits.
Mr. Eddy indicated although the sidewalk alignment is not finalized, this project would result in a
significant improvement to this area.
A resident of 466 Cotuit Road expressed concern with respect to public safety as it relates to the
installation of granite curbing. It was noted the majority of the area would be uncurbed, and emergency
vehicles would have the ability to pass and to pull over as necessary.
It was noted the proposed sidewalk would begin on Route 130 near Somerset Road and would connect to
the multi-use path on Route 130 and with other existing sidewalks.
With regards to existing trees and visibility, the project is not specific to individual driveways. There is
no objection for residents to trim vegetation to safely exit their driveway. No betterment is required for
this project.
Jill Allen, 432 Cotuit Road had questions regarding the sidewalk. Mr. Eddy responded by stating there
would be a considerable green area for safety and a cross walk to safely cross Route 130 to the sidewalk.
Motion made by Selectman Gottlieb to approve Option 1 as recommended by the DPW Director
and Project Engineer for the re-alignment of the intersection of Cotuit Road with Route 130.
Motion seconded by Selectman Cotton.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Sherman,yes Selectman Cahalane,yes Selectman Gottlieb,yes
Selectman O'Hara, yes Selectman Cotton, yes Opposed, none
