6
• Board of Selectmen
Minutes
February 25, 2002
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Public Hearing Continued—VFW Liquor License: (continued)
Selectman Cahalane opened the Hearing to solicit comment.
It was noted that the Selectmen were in receipt of several letters
in support of the Mashpee VFW Post at the subject site location and its
effort to establish a Post for its members. In addition, several letters in
opposition were also received from area residents.
Lauren Johnson-Lavender a resident of Mashpee Shores and a critical care
nurse at Falmouth Hospital voiced strong opposition to the proposal of the
VFW Post to serve alcohol in an area surrounded by residential family
neighborhoods, the recreational center, the area ball fields and bike path.
Peter Goulet, President of the Mashpee Shores Association also cited his
concern to the location of the VFW Post on the bike path location. He
• suggested the Selectmen consider restricting the hours of operation, the
service of alcohol, and address the present parking issue for safety
reasons.
Shari Tetreault, an abutter residing in the neighborhood of discussion
related concern with respect to youth safety. It was noted that
approximately 70% of Mashpee youth reside in this area. Crosswalks and
the use of a detail police officer with club functions were suggested to
support the aspect of safety.
Old Colony Drive resident Gus Stickely spoke in full support of the VFW
establishment as proposed. It was noted that there have been building and
site improvements that now enhance the Route 130 area of Mashpee. -
Michael DiMaggio, an abutter of the VFW Post also expressed support to
the operation of a private club at the subject site location. Mr. DiMaggio
indicated that the entrance and egress would be enhanced and delineated
with the installation of a 3'x6' landscaped barrier berm.
Discussion followed with regards to hours of operation, and guest policy
whereby a guest would be accompanied by a VFW member to gain
entrance into the club. The installation of a landscaped mound was
deemed appropriate for safety and to delineate the entrance and egress.
