That is my biggest thing.
Selectman Green: well, we have taken a...
Selectman Cahalane: Can I say nay part? Since day one of this, I have had one thing.
And one thing is, I want to see the Town of Mashpee indemnified
from any land suits against either the town or-any person in the
town.. That has been nay thing since the beginning. of course,
without any conversations or anything else at one point, we had a
verbal going back to our original letters with Wayne and I met with
Glenn Marshall and, we had a verbal. They in no way wanted to
take our land at that point. The discussion was what legal means
we could use to get this land, and it never got-any frther than that
because after that, we were supposed to have talks and, thea for
different reasons and what not,the talks did not start.
As far as sovereign nation goes, I think we have to wait until May
2 and see what the Bureau of Indian Affairs say because I don't
think we have a choice right now. If they rule, if the tribe is a
tribe, thea there is a protest period in which the town would have
to decide just what they want to protest...That's my feeling on it.
Selectman green: well, that is a comment period. But, we have sort of operated with
our heads in the sand. we've not made any roads to going, we
have made proposals that have driven sides apart further and
frther. I agree with you John, that now we are at a point where
we need to wait and see what the BIA cones back with from all
sides. I mean, I can't see getting the tribe to the table now. 'I've
been in discussions with some members and there is a strong
feeling against sitting down in talking now with the town because
they are this close and, they don't see the benefit in doing so, but
we as leaders of the community should have been trying to open
doors. whether we discuss the birds flying in the sky or the
herring in the river, anything to open discussions and formalize a
relationship between the town and the tribe. I bring this subject up
to clarify it, because when I read the article it seemed to be leading
the people to believe that them was a way that we could go in and
say, okay, we can take a past of this procedure and take it out, and
mare it this, instead of this. well that doesn't exist anymore, l
don't feel. I feel that at one time, It may have existed. But, I don't
feel that it exists anymore because there is a deadline on whether it
is going or not. I just wanted the people of Mashpee to be aware
that recognition isn't something that is given out in stages. It is
yes or no thing. we haven't talked the gibe. we aren't talking
