MINUTES January 25, 1996 2 BOARD OF HEALTH
"Residents were quite adapt about providing additional treatment." "That is a change
we intend to make however, it is not presented on drawm9s this evening."' "The only
change on revised plans is the septic tanl ."
. Doherty questioned, "What type of denitrification system are you proposing?77
l ir. O'Brien responded, `'We are thinking o sia "Bi -cler " units." "We would
lie the Board to consider granting a variance from regulations which require the
installation ofa second leaching field."' 'A-Ve have the reserve area available but with the
addit io nal treatment of the denitrification wits we feel that the BOD effluent, being 30
xnil igrams per liter and total suspended solids 30 nffigrams per liter, nitrate/nitrogen
probably beim 10 grams per liter, would not excessively overload the Meld and would
compensate for the cost of a Bio-clere system.7
Mr. Doherty commented, "That is not an unreasonable request." `gone of the
reasons for the requirement of installing the reserve field now is that it is a lot cheaper than
tearing up the asphalt later." "Given the additional treatment and the actual reason for the
system failing or loading up in the first place is pretty limited." "One of the the the
Board has looped at aggressively is LTA disinfection on the tail end of the system." 4` ve
would lie you to look at that and to try and work that into your proposal if possible."
Mr. O'Brien relayed, "One thing we have done for disinfection is that we propose
to dose the field eight Mmes per day rather than the four times that are required under Title
V." "This areatly increases the detention time m the field itself, we don't flood it to the
same depth." "We are not opposed to LFV disinfection."
Mr. Doherty stated, "One thing Title v is pushing is trenches." "It is out of
experience in the past that trenches have a tendency to clog up vs. flog diffusers which we
p
consider to be more a commercial structure any vay.,' "You may want to consider this
also." "'one of the town requirements is that you will be required to have a licensed septic
hauler to .aintainux ease trap."' "That has to be established and we ill need copy
y
of that agreement prior to issuing a food service permit."
Ir. O'Brien requested the Board continue this matter.
Board members agreed.
i
