Chairman read notice
The recreation Director, by authority of the Board of Selectmen
will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, December 17 , 1980 at
2 :00 p.m. in the Town Hall Samuel G. Davis School to discuss the
future use and/or disposition of the old Town Hall and the
Recreation Buildings located off route #130 in Mashpee . Your
participation is Vital,
Chairman stated that the reason for this action at this time- , is
because of vandalism that has occurred over the last couple of
months. Even though some people . have put forth their time and
effort to restore old Town Hall, it has not borne any pro6f as of-
date.
f-
dato. There was a clean-up in the summer which did .,help, but- i sIn ce
that time things have gone downhill. Most recently both buildings
but mostly Old 'Town Hall, has been broken into on a number of
occasions with a great deal of vandalism resulting. Plumbing
and wiring taken- out, toliets smashed and destroyed, people making
use of closets as bathrooms , etc. Pictures of the most recent
distruction were passed around for those present to look at.
Selectman Garland stated that as he entered the building a few
minutes ago, he was informed that the buildings known as the
Recreation Building and the Old Town Hall were further vandalized
last ni gh t.. ra the r s e the r ly and there is no estimate o f the additional
damage that has been done.
Chairman stated that we have a difficult situation in that we
obviously have buildings that we would Like to see preserved and
on the other hand, we have buildings that are systematically being
vandalized. We don' t have the money to rehab -the buildings . In
fact, I think it ,is fair to say that we have no money to even fix
and secure the buildings. The future as far as finances are concerned
is very blear. We balance this off with somebody getting badly
hurt, even loss of life. If these building were ever to be arsoned,
and a police officer or fireman gets permdnently disabled or even
killed over these things , I personally can' t see it,
ir. Peters asked Chairman if the Town has looked into any grants
to rehabilitate the building,
i
Chairman responded that the Hoard net with Don Cassano, whose is
i the Grant writer for the Town, about two weeks ago. This was
discussed with hien, and we have two things working against u .
One, lots of programs aren' t funded and two we don' t qualify
because of numbers and also because of time . By the time a grant
was available and we proceeded, we are talking about 8 to 10
months .
I
Selectman Thomas stated that time is working against us in regards
to grants, I think Chuckie Green look into this and at that time,
he found out that there were no funds available .
i I
Chairman stated that the Government is earmarking -funds towards
rehab of' housin . The
I
g qualifications guidelines are the numbers
of unemployment and the rate of unemployment. we stand well as
i -
I
L -
