He said that the speed signs
mast be approved through the State and the Regi-stry of Motor Vehicles; however, the Select--
men could approve the caution signs. Chairman Hansom inquired as to how long it would take
to go through the State and asked if they could place the signs just posting what the speed
limit currently iso Chief Frye commented that the speed lirnitr is 40 miles per hour in the
area and all that they would be doing is posting it and not changing the speed limit.
Ernie V irgi lio said that the"Selectmen have done to the D:P:W. in -the past. Jean Thomas
said that she though.it would be the Police "Chief. Chairman Hanson suggested taking what-
ever avenue without o i n through six mors th s'o f red tape. Jean suggested that the Board
approve the Chairman signing a letter of approval if nobody else is around.
Ernie Virgilio commented that he will be -having similar requests in the future for Hoopole
Road, Mashpee Deck and Creat Neck.
firman Hanson suggested that the signs be put up and then for them to go after the approval
the speed limit signs,
Jean Thomas asked who is in charge of District 7 Ernie Virgilio said that Robert Smith was
the Deputy Director.
Dick Terry roved to approve the posting of the speed limit signs and the posting of the beach
and slow children signs as per recommendation of the Police Chief. Mr. O'Malley-Keyes said that in order to complete his report he had to consult
with DEQE, the Department of Marine Fisheries, and C M. He said that there needs to be a lot
of hard decisions made if we have any inclination to protect, preserve and increase the basic
shellfish types that we have in the -town -- clams, quahogs and scallops primarily-as well a
several other sub-categories.
Mr. O'Malley-Keyes said that the situation on the Mashpee River is fairly serious inasmuch as
each time we experience a heavy rain storm, it will be closed.
O'Malley Keyes discussed the departments that they ars dealing with such as the DEQE and
Department of Marine Fisheries stating that they are understaffed and do not have the time
take care of just Matshpee as they have 800 miles of shoreline to take care of. He said
that - he has had conversation with the Barnstable County Board of Health who seem to be inter-
ested in assisting any town that requests it in order to find the sources of the pollution.
