GENERAL ORDER Un <br /> SUBJECT: ' Accident Investigation/Accident Reporting <br /> I. PURPOSE: <br /> This Directive shall establish procedures and discuss general considerations <br /> by which this Agency will respond to, investigate, and report accidents particular- <br /> ly Motor Vehicle Accidents, that occur.within the Town of Mashpee. <br /> II. RESPONSE: <br /> Patrol units assigned to an area where an accident occurs shall obtain as <br /> much information as possible from the dispatcher-the type of accident, the <br /> extent of injuries, . traffic. conditions etc. If there are no reported injuries, <br /> the officer shall proceed directly to the scene at a normal rate of speed, obeying <br /> all traffic regulations. In situations that demand urgent response-injuries, <br /> fire, gasoline spill, and the like-the officer shall proceed as quickly as <br /> possible without endangering himself or other citizens utilizing the emergency <br /> lights and siren. <br /> Patrol units assigned to the area where the accident occurs and units sent <br /> by the Dispatcher or Watch Commander shall be the only units authorized to <br /> proceed to the scene of an accident. The first officer on the scene shall make <br /> a radio report of the circumstances and request assistance if any is required. <br /> If injuries are reported at the scene the responding officer shall notify <br /> Fire/Rescue personnel through the Dispatcher and immediately attend to the <br /> injured person(s) . <br /> III. PROCEDURES: <br /> 1.To prevent further accidents or damage, the police cruiser shall be parked <br /> to therear of the accident scene a safe distance away so that if struck, it <br /> will not be pushed into the accident scene. <br /> 2. The cruiser should be positioned so that on-coming traffic will be routed <br /> in such a way as to avoid accident vehicles. The emergency lights will be <br /> activated, <br /> 3. Block off any street or raodway at the direction of the watch commander <br /> when necessary until the accident scene is cleared. Additional officers shall <br /> be requested as required. <br /> 4. Reflectors or flares, when used, should be placed to the fronf and reap{ <br /> of the accident scene for a distance sufficient to give adequate warning to <br /> motorists approaching an accident scene.and away from flammables that may be <br /> part of debris from the accident. When possible the officer will put on any <br /> iridescent or reflective material. <br /> 5. After taking precautionary measures to ensure that the accident will not <br /> involve other vehicles or persons, the officer's primary duty is to give prompt <br /> attention' to the needs of any injured person(s) . <br />
