PERSONNEL BOARD <br /> MA HPEE TOWN HALL <br /> EETI NG of oC i ER 17 ? 1983 <br /> The following members of the Personnel Board were present for tonight ' s <br /> meeting: Robert Sullivan, Chairman , Caroline Gilligan, David Lardy, <br /> Manuel Glickman and Carrie Saunders . Also present during the meeting <br /> was a member of the press from the Falmouth Enterprise , <br /> Chairman Sullivan convened the meeting promptly a :oo p',m . <br /> Chief Hartin ret with the Board so that they could review the written <br /> portion of the examination which will be administered on October l <br /> to the applicants for the position of permanent firefighter and call <br /> firefighter . Forty individuals will be tak'in-g the test , ten of whom <br /> are nationally registered paramedics . Two thirds are f rom the Cape <br /> and one third is from Boston and outlying areas . There will be two <br /> separate lists -- one for permanent firefighter and the other for call <br /> firefighters . <br /> The Chief explained that the test was developed in part by himself and <br /> parts which were pertinent was taken from testing which other depart- <br /> ments used. Bob asked if it had been tested in ahee The Chief re- <br /> plied "no" , Discussion was made on the length of t1me for the testing <br /> with the Chief stating that it would take ,several hours and that two <br /> hours has been set for 100 multiple choice questions . He said that he <br /> would be choosing the best qualified applicants who are physically and <br /> mentally capable and have a level of certificiation. The Chief said <br /> that he would be looking at their prig work history as well , Manny <br /> asked for a list of those failing the examination as well as those pass- <br /> ing it so that the Board could look at the percentages . <br /> Discussion was made on how many volunteers are on the department currently? <br /> The Chief replied that there were three volunteers currently . Carrie asked <br /> the Chief if he would consider that a reasonable number for a town this' <br /> size? The Chief replied '.'no" . Further discussion was made on the tasks <br /> for volunteers versus full-time firefighters . The Chief said that volun- <br /> teers were required to per .orm the same tasks as - the full-time Members and <br /> that in order to insure continuous quality, they must meet the same stan- <br /> dards . Carrie ,asked the Chief if he would agree that it was better to <br /> have someone rather than no 'one The Chief said that he would rather have <br /> three highly qualified than fifteen that were not . Carrie asked if he <br /> would look for a person that scored high on performance and low on verbal? <br /> The Chief replied that if the persons on the list had been depleted and <br /> there were no other applicants that had passed, he would consider re- <br /> advertising and running the exam again. <br /> Carrie asked who was going to administer the test , The Chief replied that <br /> he would and sere it. He explained that he plans to establish a list of <br /> random numbers and applicants would select a random number and place it <br /> n the exam. <br /> Note : The physical part of the testing is scheduled for October 30 and <br /> the interviewing is scheduled for November 7 . <br />
