7 <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> July 9, 2018 <br /> Discussion and Vote on Strategy for Advancing the Mashpec Wampanoag Tribe Reaffirmation Act <br /> Legislation: <br /> Discussion followed with respect to strategy for advancing the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Reaffirmation Act <br /> legislation. With the pending August recess, the Town may have to retain the services of an advocate to move <br /> this forward. The issue was deemed a paramount of importance to the Town of Mashpee and its Tribal <br /> partners. <br /> Motion made by Selectman Gottlieb that the Board of Selectmen vote to authorize the Town Manager, <br /> upon consultation with Town Counsel, to retain the services of a lobbyist for the purposes of <br /> monitoring and advancing the Tribe's Trust Reaffirmation Act legislation pending in the United States <br /> Congress. <br /> Motion seconded by Selectman Cotton. <br /> VOTE: 4-1. Motion carries. <br /> Roll Call Vote: <br /> Selectman Sherman,yes Selectman Cahalane, no Selectman Gottlieb,yes <br /> Selectman O'Hara,yes Selectman Cotton,yes Opposed, (1) <br /> Selectman Cahalane related concern with respect to the unknown cost. It was suggested the Town Manager <br /> develop a cost estimate for additional review. As the matter was debated, the benefit of this passage and the <br /> approaching time frame of the July session was highly considered as were monetary constraints. <br /> Town Manager Rodney C. Collins agreed to address this immediately by first consulting special counsel in <br /> Washington, D.C. <br /> Discussion and Approval of Letter for Protection of Nantucket Sound: <br /> Correspondence was received from Sandy Taylor, Executive Assistant to the Alliance to Protect <br /> Nantucket Sound dated June 28, 2018 requesting the Board support federal legislation to permanently protect <br /> the Sound. A sample letter is being circulated to Nantucket Sound stakeholders. The letter is intended to be <br /> presented to the Massachusetts delegation. The deadline is July 10, 2018. <br /> Motion made by Selectman Gottlieb to declare Nantucket Sound as a national and historic place, and <br /> write in support of this approach to request federal legislation to secure permanent protection for <br /> Nantucket Sound. <br /> Motion seconded by Selectman O'Hara. <br /> VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0. <br /> Roll Call Vote: <br /> Selectman Sherman,yes Selectman Cahalane,yes Selectman Gottlieb,yes <br /> Selectman O'Hara,yes Selectman Cotton,yes Opposed, none <br />
