r
PERSONNEL BOARD MINUTES
MEETING OF FEBRUARY 10, 1993
MASHPEE TOWN HALL
The following members of the Personnel Board were present : Rita
Sousa, Chairman; Jane Stockbridge, Clerk; Robert Sullivan, and Leo
Turo.
Chairman Sousa convened the meeting at 12 : 30 p.m.
BOARD SECRETARY INTERVIEW - WATERWAYS COMMISSION
The Board, along with the assistance of Ben Gordon, Chairman of the
Waterways Commission, and Dan Homeyer, a member of the Waterways
Commission, interviewed Carol Canty for the position of Board
Secretary to Waterways . Chairman Sousa reviewed the hourly rate and
the hours of the position with Mrs . Canty. She was advised that the
Waterway meetings are held once a month on Tuesday evening and that
she would be guaranteed four hours for the meeting plus time for
transcribing and typing . Upon completion of the interview, all were
in agreement to recommend Carol Canty for appointment . Mrs . Canty
is currently employed as the secretary to the Dean of Academic
Affairs at the Cape Cod Community College . Some of her duties at
the college include serving as recording secretary. She is an
excellent typist ( typing at 70 w . p .m. without any errors ) , and she
has excellent shorthand skills .
Note : Another candidate scheduled for an interview, Fern Daniels,
cancelled her appointment .
PERSONNEL BOARD MINUTES
In order that the Board members have a chance to review their
minutes of the January 12 meeting, the Board postponed accepting the
minutes until their next regularly scheduled meeting .
CORRESPONDENCE FROM PART-TIME DISPATCHER
Chairman Sousa advised the Board that she received a hand-written
letter from a part-time dispatcher Jean Lotrionte stating that she
has worked over 780 hours and that she feels that she should be paid
for a sick day which she took on January 16 . After reading a
section of the P.A . P. under sick leave, Jean called Barbara Horton
and said that she felt she should get paid . Barbara told her "no" .
Rita indicated that after looking at the sick leave section of the
P .A. P. , she can understand why Jean interpreted it to mean that she
should be paid . Rita commented that we could do a better job in
repeating lanaguage relative to the probationary period "after one
year" . Rita said that Barbara Horton was correct in not authorizing
payment because of a one-year probation.
Rita explained that Jean Lotrionte is a non-standard part-time
dispatcher. According to the P.A. P. , non-standard people work less
than 20 hours a week . Also, non-standard employees are on a
one-year probationary period . This individual started last July and
will be on probation until this coming July.
