Y A BOARD OF SELECTMEN Pace MINUTES MONDAY, AUGUST 10 1992 Consolidation of Shellfish/Harbormaster Departments Discussion: Boater ' s deserve to have a professional Harbormaster ' s ter Department explains Mr. Madden. It is unfair to expect boat owners to pay fees with limited services . A professional is needed to represent the , Town on- a state and federal leve]. relates Mr. Madden. Vernon Thomas indicated that the Shellfish Commission met on August 6 , 1992 - to discuss the consolidation of two dei a tments & The consensus related that - the workload for one .individual would be horrendous , To hire additional -help would end up costing- the Town More. The shellfish program has an economical benefit to the Town, it is income for some and a meal for others , This resource should not be allowed to dry up in these economical times . It is important to maintain the recreational aspect to shellfish notes Mr. Thomas . A strong propagation program is necessary to maintain the shellfish beds now and for the future. This requires a full time year round individual to provide adequate coverage informs Mr. Thomas . Administrative duties are also more demanding each year . Mr. York was present to discuss his opposition to the proposed consolidation of two departments . He indicates that the best scenario is a separate Shellfish Commissioner and Harbormaster on a fall time basis . one person cannot do both jobs , Two professionals running both departments would be the most efficient and economical arrangement indicates Mr . Fork. Ben Gordon indicated that when the Waterways Commission met in early February to discuss the concept to provide equal or better service for the Town, they did not know Mr, York or Mr . Madden of which they are presently working in harmony* Mr. Gordon related that the Waterways Commission met on August 41 1992 to further discuss the consolidation*
