# 1 <br />BOARD OF SELECTMEN Page <br />MINUTES <br />MONDAY, AUGUST I99 <br />David C. Hendricks Committee for Hunan Ri hts <br />Members of the 1c c R and residents were present to request <br />the Selectmen' support for a Mashpee Human Rights commission. <br />Mr. Peters, a member of the move committee and Tribal Council <br />indicated that the Tribal Council 'is supportive of this proposal. <br />e t need to bring the community back together- as - a whole <br />indicated Mr. Peters. People who have been violated will have <br />someplace to go where there is someone they can trust indicated <br />Mr. Peters. <br />Our intent is to help the governing body -indicated Nelson <br />Andrews, This committee is proposed for citizens. The Citizens <br />Complaint Review committee has been re -phrased as the Human <br />Rights commission informed Mr. Andrews.. <br />Thepublic should be aware of what this is all about <br />.indicated Mr. Andrews. This proposal is similar to a mediation <br />process. It should be covered by the Town Bylaw to include laws <br />and,regulationso We ask Town counsel to represent the Commission <br />indicated Mr, Andrews <br />This town does not have an Affirmative Action Committee <br />explained Alice Lopez. Minorities historically have been <br />disenfranchised* our concern is to protect the jobs for people <br />living in Mashpee and employee citizens in Mashpee indicated <br />. Lopez. <br />As a committee, we can review the wide variety of complaints <br />related Ms. Lopez. complaints received include; unfair hiring <br />and firing and complaints by women. We can offer minority <br />support to understand labor contracts noted Ms. Lopez. <br />It is the consensus of the Board to consult Town Counsel <br />and make copies of the Human Rights commission proposal available <br />for public review. The Selectmen are in favor of the concept and <br />goals to bring the community together* Further discussion will <br />follow. The Hoard of Selectmen indicated that the above proposal <br />would require Town Meeting action for approval. <br />9:05 p.m. Recess. <br />9:11 p.m. Meeting resumed.
