1 <br />Tr , <br />Wr <br />MASHPEE FIRE & RESCUE DEPARTMENT <br />i 99 Nathan Ellis Highway, Ma h ee, Massachusetts 02649 <br />508- 39-14 FAX 508-539- 453 <br />7/28/93 <br />Board of Selectmen <br />Town of Mashpee <br />16 Great beck Rd, forth <br />1 Iashpee, MA 02649 <br />Dew Selectmen , <br />I am writing this lever to acknowledge the outstanding performance of Life Guard, Anita <br />llkola, who was working at the Town Beach on John's Pond, July 2th. <br />That afternoon, Mr. Robert Gould and his wife, of whiwaan, MA., were enjoy m*g the <br />sunshine and playing with a radio controlled model speed ,boat. Ir. Gould started t <br />experience problems with the boat and it subsequently stopped operating about a hundred <br />and fifty yards off shore. Mr. Gould, 66,a retired 32 year veteran of the Brockton Fire <br />Dept* decided to swim out to the boat. Once at the boa% Mr. Gould began to experience <br />rather severe difficulty breathing and started to panic, which made his breathing even <br />more difficult. <br />Life Guard 01kkola, who was on shore, immediately realized that she had a person in <br />rouble and swam out to aid the victim. Once at Mr. ould's side, she took command of <br />the situation by reassuring him and aiding him back to shore. Once safely on shore Ms. <br />lkkola notified the gate attendant, who had a portable radio, to contact the I1ashpee Fire <br />and Rescue Dept. so that an ambulance could respond to assist her with the patient. F/F <br />Kelley, Paramedic Evaul and I responded to the scene. W. Gould, who was now <br />sitting in a chair and still experience difficulty breathing, was immediately placed on <br />oxygen. Ms. Olkkola briefly gage us a report of the events and reassured Mrs. Gould <br />while we initiated Advanced Life Support measures to Mr. Gould. Mr. Gould was then <br />wamported to Falmouth Hospital Emergency Room and was stable upon our arrival. <br />During the entire episode, ibis. 01kkola, remained extremely cairn and reassuring, , She <br />performed extremely well dung a time crisis -and the purpose f this letter is t <br />acknowledge her achievemem <br />RespecdWly, <br />John P.
