INTRODUCTION <br /> The purpose +ref this handbook is to aid Town employees tobe- <br /> come acquainted with the policies of the Ma tepee Town <br /> Government. The policies have as their purpose to promote <br /> the efficiency and economy of government, to promoto the <br /> morale and well-being of employees, and to provide equitable <br /> employment opportunities for employees and 4or candidates f or <br /> employment in Town service. In presenting- these policies, we <br /> have tried to generalize as much as possible. For more <br /> information regarding a policy, please feel free to ask your <br /> supervisor, on call the Personnel Office, <br /> HISTORY <br /> The Town, which was incorporated in 1870, covers 23.86 square <br /> miles and has 26 miles of shoreline. During the past <br /> century, Ma hpee has grown from an intimate community to a <br /> thriving boom tern complete with country clubs and <br /> condominiums. Mas pee was a rural, close-knit Indian com- <br /> munity until the recent building bonanza. Wampanoaq Indians <br /> dominated town politics and town hall. Before the first wave <br /> of settlers arrived in the 1660's the sprawling Wampanoag <br /> nation dominated the forests and coastlines f eastern <br /> Massachusetts, Mashpee, called Massipee in the early days, <br /> was the traditional seat of Wampanoaq authority. <br /> r ashpee is one of the Commonwealth's fastest growing towns. <br /> Between 1970 and 1980, Mashpee's population grew 187 percent, <br /> jumping r;om 1,288 residents in 1970 to 3,700 in 1980. <br /> Between 1980 and 1990, Mashpee 9 s population grew 158 percent, <br /> jumping to9,543 in 1990. <br /> w <br />
