4
Selectmen' s Minutes Page 5.
9/12/79
. Continued:
O' Connell: I ' '► in my twelfth year. I started at $1. 800,
and change. Show me an employee in town with
that percentage of twelve God damn years in any
office, anywhere. That had been the figure
requested by this Board originally. The Board had
requested .$5,,200 per member. That was a vote
t.
of this Board. Now you have one at $20, 000 and
two at $2, 500,
Benway: Let me correct one thing. It wasn' t $15,600 last
year. It was $12, 700.
Abby: Now your getting $20,000.
Benway: Yes.,
Murphy: Chet, do you think that there' s a (U=nfair) portion
in distribution
Garland: No, I think. s o * .1 think I will not answer that
question.
i
Murphy: What do you think of the total relati e to what
was spent last year
Garland: Well, if we don' t have an Executive Secretary, • i f
your talking about dollars , were not spending anymore.
Murphy: What was Frank' s salary
Benay: about $17,.000.
McCartney: So with the Executive Secretary your salaries last
year were $40 ,000.
Garland: What mosteo le do not understand is the fact
p p
that there' s no such thing as a full time , or
part time selectman. The law does say that elected
officials. will spend that amount of time necessary
to accomplish his job. I feel personally, and
have a log of this, that I spend as much time
in this office as anybody else does. All I 'm asking,
and I was not here and I was not a member of the
Board at that time , and the Board did vote and
requested a certain salary range, It was changed
on town meeting floor and all' I'm asking is for
reconsideration. I have heard the statement said
that I 'm a part time selectman and if I want to
spend 4-5 hours a day here that' s my problem. I don' t
lake that kind of statement. -Its not my problem, Its
the job this town elected me to do- that I'm trying to
do.
