TOWN.
I, Tabun of cc
p
•
16 GREAT NECK ROAD NORTH
MAS P E, MA 02649
January 4, 1993
To Members of the Board of Selectmen
FR M: ' Fancy Caffyn
ISE: Proposed Human Service Needs Strategic Planning Session
Since November meetings have been held, sponsored by the Taxpayers Association
the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee, dealing with the social needs of our
i
residents and the attendant effects upon the performance of students, as well as upon the
overall quality of life in our community. In addressing this issue, there is currently great
interest to moving forward with an effort to pool our local resources toward the goal of
developing a profile of local human service needs, as well as identifying gaps in the human0
;
service delivery system. It is felt that this data would be crucial in presenting our local
needs in future attempts to receive grant funding for addressing local human service reeds.
In order to movethi's process forward, the committee is proposing to conduct a
Human Services Strategic Planning Session on Wednesday,January 26, 1994. This
session would pull together representatives from key Town departments as well as from
community organizations to conduct a brainstorming session aimed at gaining a better
understanding of the nature of our human service needs. This represents an important step
in gaining a better handle on our local human service needs. Our tentative list of participants
would include: representation from the Police Department, United Church Village, two
Selectmen,Executive Secretary, Leisure Services Department, School Committee,
Superintendent of Schools, School Psychologist, Guidance Counselor, visiting Nurses
Association,Taxpayers Association, Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce,Tribal
Council and Council on Aging. Any additional input on participation would be welcomed.
In order to best direct the efforts of these approximately sixteen participants, a
facilitator should be used for the day at a cost o $700.This is considerably less than the
cost of a consultant conducting a needs assessment for us, and will provide much more
meaningful results which directly reflect the actual concerns of those dealing with these
.
issues.
At this time the support of the Board is sought to sponsor the strategic planning
session and appoint two representatives to pa +cipate.
i
i
