MASHPEE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE
TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 1994
TOWN HALL
Present: Peter Dinizio, Merry Sue Ahlgren, Bill Martiros , Janice Mills,
Steve Greelish , Joe Polito, Bill Jones , Paul Griffin, Michael Pare
The Committee proceeded with interviews of 4 architectural firms - SMMA,
DRA, Keyes and HMFH . Interviews were limited to 30 minutes - 15 minutes
for presentation and 15 minutes for questions.
HMFH
HMFH introduced members of their firm. Along with them were Caroline
Markinson and Dr . Steven Arnoff from Bibliotech , technology consulting
firm. Bibliotech brings educational technology experience unmatched by any
other firm HMFH has dealt with .
HMFH said at the last interview they stressed their past work . They
believe their work on Cape Cod is second to none. They have more high
school experience than any of the other firms the Committee is
interviewing.
They presented a chart showing the size (sq feet) of the high schools they
have worked on.
They reviewed Dr . Collabro' s draft educational plan . They presented a High
School educational facilities matrix for the schools they have designed .
HMFH has experience with every type of facility included in Mashpee 's plan
except for a Superintendent's suite. This should give the Committee a
level of comfort that HMFH is familiar with every project component.
Caroline Markinson from Bibliotech was Director of Library and information
systems for the Brookline public schools for 14 years. She brought
information on the company and a list of references . They have done 40
jobs in the last 5-6 years. She explained it makes more sense to put
together your information systems as a plan, unifying the whole process .
Dr. Steve Arnoff again stressed technology must all be integrated, TV,
video, computer, telephone . How will they all work together? The students
and teachers can then get the information when they need it and not later
on as an additional exercise.
The Committee had asked some specific questions in their letter to HMFH .
How will they create an exciting learning environment? Through color,
material choices , textures an use of natural light. They brought photos of
their completed buildings and the Committees visits to their school ' s
should convince the Committee. Sense of "place" , belonging - knowing
immediately where you are in the school . Creating unusual spaces and a
sense of scale .
What makes HMFH different? Their recent high school experience make them as
much as or more qualified then their competitors . Their experience
building buildings that relate to Cape Cod.
1
